It's easy to put on and take off. The footrest is a bit narrow for people with flat feet. It takes awhile to break in. Weatherproof and great toe kick.

True to size, especially in length. Waterproof, good looking, stable & comfortable, easy on & off. One of the best shoes I've ever owned and the most supportive & confidence inspiring low trail shoe I've owned.

6-22-10 UPDATE> I've worn through the soles & I'm looking to buy another pair. People who stop using these because the laces break are being silly & wasteful. Mine broke & I just tied a small square knot at the break & put a small spot of waterproof glue on the knot to keep it secure. You can recenter the top clasp & pull tab easily. The repair is barely noticeable. They're still going strong after months of hard use. I did the same to the right shoelace because it was frayed in the same area. I cut & repaired it to avoid a break during a nightime jaunt with my dog.

I love these shoes, when they wear out (if they ever do) I will buy another pair hands down. I use them for everything, running, weight lifting, and casual wear. At first I thought they felt a bit loose in the heel but now I think it is comfortable. I have no complaints with them and have found no defects. They are a bit expensive but I think it is worth it for the comfort and durability. I don't have any advice for how they fit because I already had a pair of Salomons, so maybe try on a pair somewhere. The price Amazon offered was cheaper than my local sports store.

I've been running for about twenty years but unfortunately I haven't been happy with my shoes for most of that time. Over the years I'd been spending more and more on large clunky motion control shoes and thick padded socks because that's what everyone told me I needed. I ran for a little under five miles on some great trails in Gladwyne this afternoon in the new shoes and I was amazed at how well they felt.

First, the lases are wonderful because they tighten up very quickly and easily. Normally, if the toes aren't tight enough it takes a few moments to adjust the laces down near the toes and then you have to pull the slack up to the top in an attempt to tighten uniformly but these are so easy. You just pull them tight, sinch the lock and that's it, they're uniformly tight. It took me a moment to figure out what to do with the excess laces, they fold up under the top of the tongue. Then, the shoes felt so great, they were snug without being tight and they felt so wonderful on the trail. I've gotten used to my feet getting a little wet when I crossed streams but I didn't feel any water at all in these shoes.

I've tried enough shoes to know that everyone is different and these shoes won't fit everyone as well as they fit me and other people will have problems but I must say that for me, wow, magic shoes, says it all for me...

This is my second pair of Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX shoes, having purchased one earlier from Sport Chalet. I bought the first pair because I liked it's feel, the quick lace system, Goretex liner and looks. I use it for light to moderate hiking when a heavier, high cut boot isn't necessary. Unfortunately, I bought a size 8 even though I wear a 7-1/2 because that's the smallest size carried by the Sport Chalet. After putting some miles on the shoe the fit around the heal started loosening up so I found and bought a pair of 7-1/2 size shoes on Amazon. It's the exact same model but in a different size and color. These are medium width shoes so those with wide feet should look elsewhere. Other than that they are true to size. The 7-1/2 pair fit me perfectly. It has a roomy toe box and very good foot support. They're lighter than traditional low cut hiking shoes but they look like they'll wear out faster judging by the depth of thread on the sole. Still, I'm pleased with the shoe and expect to put many happy miles on them. The pair of size 8 shoes I bought earlier didn't go to waste. They are now the most expensive and best gripping pair of yard shoes I've ever had.

I have owned these shoes for about 3 weeks and have only hiked about 12 miles of trail, but I must say that I am pleased thus far. Here are my pros:

1. The lacing system is great and it really form fits around your foot. You also dont have to worry about your laces snagging on anything in thick brush.

2. The waterproof is awesome. I stood in a pond nearly to the top of the shoe for about 10 seconds and my feet were dry as can be.

3. The shoes look fantastic. People comment on them wherever I go.

If the laces break I imagine I'd be screwed but I'd call Salomon and make them send me another pair of these gems. I strongly recommend these shoes.

8.) Great Trail Runner - but the Laces Break!

I enjoyed this shoe for the short time I could actually run in them. I estimate maybe 40-50 miles of trail running, training for my first 50k. The shoes were comfortable, and ran a bit narrow - which is perfect for me. I have a very narrow, low volume, high-arch (difficult to fit) foot.

The shoes were stable, but not clunky. The soles were a bit slippery in wet conditions (more than my montrail hardrocks or my TNF Ultras).

But - the weakest link is the laces. I found the 'thin' laces generated some pinch points on my foot (I have to lace very tightly due to my foot). To boot, I snapped a lace this winter, and haven't worn them since. I'm still hunting for replacement laces (which I think I just found on REI.com).

No matter what the sales people or the Salomon brochures say - these laces can and do indeed break. Google it if you don't believe me.

So - stick with the laces was my lesson learned. I did enjoy the speed that I could put on & remove my shoe though. I will miss that.

I bought a pair on Amazon less than a year ago and the laces have broken already. They should have lasted longer considering how much money I spent on these. I will not buy another pair of these in the future.

10.) Laces Break!!!

The laces on my XA-Pros broke as well after fairly light regular use and from what I can see there's no way to replace. Too bad. Great shoe otherwise, but who builds a shoe with irreplaceable laces!!! And NO customer service contact to boot. I'm really frustrated.

Too bad for Salomon...

11.) Great Shoe but with a Bad Flaw

I have owned these shoes for 6 months, and I have put them through a lot, but that is what they are designed for. Unfortunately, the eyelet for the shoe lace that is closest to the toe broke along with the shoe lace. If you look closely at the eyelet near the toe, you will see that it is made of a nylon, not plastic, like the other eyelets. As a result, the eyelets on my shoes have worn down and one has blown out already. Once the eyelet breaks, the shoe is difficult to wear.

If you look at the"stays" for the laces, there are 4 on either side. The top 3 are wider and more robust than the bottom row. The bottom row tears through and breaks. I can't help but think that if they were the same construction as the upper three rows, they wouldn't break. Frustrating. My shoes are only 3 to 4 months old. One stay on each shoe is broken. Any warranty on these?

I have been buying products from Amazon for more than 10 years and this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review. This is the second pair of Salomon trail runners that I have owned. Each pair has given me roughly 5 months of faithful service. They're extremely comfortable, sturdy and most importantly, waterproof. However, the lacing system is a nightmare. On my first pair, the friction from the laces rubbing against exterior lining on the toe created a gash that all but eliminated their ability to keep water out. You can't simply replace the laces either, as they are integrated into the shoe. However, I liked the shoes enough to buy another pair. Not surprisingly, roughly five months in, the friction from the laces rubbing against the outside of the toe had caused yet another gash that cut right through the gore-tex lining. However, I continued to wear them, as I wasn't about to give up on a pair of shoes that cost me $130. Shortly after the hole developed in the lining, one of the grommets that holds the laces in place broke, making the shoe virtually unwearable. I have now spent close to a month trying to get Salomon to replace the shoes and have found their customer service to be as ineffective as their lacing system. They refuse to give out a telephone number and have no e-mail contact. The tell you to go to an authorized dealer for all returns, but neglect to mention that the dealer can't be a big box store (Dicks, REI, etc.). I am now in the process of trying to find a dealer who will process the return for me. For $130+ dollars, I expect more from a shoe and the manufacturer.
